# AI training as a side hustle (keep your job)

AI training work is mostly hourly contract work you can do around a day job. Live listings currently show typical top rates of $34–$110/hr (median $70/hr, from 545 distinct listed rates across 25 platforms).

Some AI training contracts can fit around a day job. Check each role's weekly hours and schedule. Browse 3,293 open roles on the [live jobs](https://aipaylist.com/jobs) board, and use [platform profiles](https://aipaylist.com/platforms) to compare how platforms work. Listed pay is read from public sources.

I kept my day job and still got paid by more than one AI-training platform. That is the usual shape of this work: hourly, remote, no fixed shift, and no requirement to quit anything. Right now the directory holds 3,293 open roles, with typical top rates of $34–$110/hr (median $70/hr, from 545 distinct listed rates across 25 platforms).

A side hustle only works if the hours are real and the rate survives contact with unpaid training. The rest of this page is about that, not about quitting.

## What the week actually looks like

- Most postings are contract. A few ask for full-time availability; the job page quotes that requirement in the posting's own words.
- Evenings and weekends are enough for many rating and writing roles, once you are past the first interview.
- The first week is heavier: assessments, a spoken intro, sometimes an unpaid enablement module.
- After that, the constraint is usually the queue, not your calendar.

> My scheduling rule: I block the interview for a time I can sit uninterrupted with camera, microphone and full-screen share. I do not start an assessment at 11pm and hope. A failed first attempt on some platforms is permanent for that project.

## What it can add up to

If you land work at the median top rate of $70/hr and you honestly have five free hours in a week, that is $350 of listed time, before tax, empty queues and rejected tasks. Treat that as a ceiling on a good week, not a budget line.

Model evaluation & rating currently shows a median top rate of $40/hr (typical $25–$60/hr, highest $200/hr, from 53 distinct rates, on a page listing 226 live roles). Software engineering currently shows a median top rate of $90/hr (typical $65–$120/hr, highest $400/hr, from 139 distinct rates, on a page listing 472 live roles). Credentialed fields pay more still, and they expect the credential.

## How to keep it from eating the day job

- Apply early, then stop refreshing. Alerts exist so you do not live on the homepage.
- Stack two platforms. One queue will go quiet. That is not a reason to check it every hour.
- Set aside tax money on every payout. These are contractor payments.
- Read exclusivity clauses. They are uncommon. They are not imaginary.

## Common questions

### Can I do AI training work alongside a full-time job?

Yes. That is how most people use these platforms, me included. Check each posting for a minimum weekly hours line. If it demands full-time availability, skip it.

### Will my employer have a problem with this?

These are usually separate contracts with AI labs or data vendors, not a second employer in your industry. Still read your own employment contract for moonlighting and confidentiality rules, and never paste employer material into a training task.

### How many hours a week is realistic?

Enough to finish interviews in week one, then whatever the queue gives you. A good week at the median top rate of $70/hr is a handful of focused evenings, not a second shift. Empty weeks happen.

Method: rates are read from each platform's own public job feed. One vote per unique platform+rate band, counted at the top of the band (the most the role says it can pay). Per-task pay is never converted to hourly. No benchmark is published below 5 distinct listed rates. Population: since 2026-08-26 a role must show at least $10/hr (or $10 per task) to be listed, so these figures describe listed roles rather than all AI work; lower-paid rating work exists and is not represented.
