One free evening. Another AI job assessment. Is it worth your time?

You have one free evening. Another AI job wants an assessment. Before you give it that evening, check whether the opportunity can work for you.

In an August r/WorkOnline post, one applicant described repeated Welo Data qualifications without earnings. That is one person's account, not an audited result for the platform. The useful question it raises is what another assessment would actually move forward.

1. Find the requirement that could rule you out

Read the original role. Check residence, required work authorization, language, credentials and availability. Mark each essential requirement yes, no or unknown. If the country rule is missing, resolve it before starting. Spending an hour on a test will not answer it.

No coding is only one requirement. DataAnnotation's generalist route also specifies writing, reasoning and a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.

2. Name the skill the work would use

Finish this sentence: I can judge or produce this work because I have done ____. Use a real example: editing writing, checking financial analysis, reviewing code or working in the required language. Prepare examples you can explain honestly, then follow the assessment's own rules.

3. Check the whole time commitment

Look for the assessment estimate, equipment requirements, whether progress saves and the steps afterward. If your quiet window is 45 minutes, a longer timed exercise needs a different slot. Find out which screening and onboarding activities, if any, are paid.

Before repeating work, check whether the platform can reuse something you have already passed. Mercor documents assessment reuse for comparable roles. Check the actual application checklist; reuse does not mean you have been selected.

4. Separate the contract rate from your return on time

Divide gross pay by paid hours plus active unpaid hours for the same period. That tells you what all the effort returned. It does not change the contract rate per paid hour. The worked example and calculator below show why the amount of paid work matters.

5. Write down what the next status would prove

A submitted application, a passed assessment, a project offer, paid work completed and money received are separate milestones. micro1, for example, says certification makes you eligible for relevant projects but does not guarantee immediate placement.

Make one application record

Record the original role link, your eligibility checks, active screening time, written pay terms and last confirmed stage. Add a next check date based on the provider's instructions. Update the record after each session so you can decide whether another hour is useful.

What screening time changes: a worked example

ScenarioGross payAll active hoursGross per active hour
5 paid; 3 unpaid hours$200.008$25.00
30 paid; 3 unpaid hours$1,200.0033$36.36
0 paid; 3 unpaid hours$0.003$0.00

Divide gross pay by paid hours plus active unpaid hours. Keep calendar days waiting separate. The result is before fees, expenses and taxes; it does not change your contract rate. Recalculate for the same period if more paid work arrives.

What did all that effort return?

Start with the hypothetical example, then enter your own figures for the same period. The calculation runs in this page and needs no account.

Gross pay per active hour invested

$25.00

$200.00 gross pay ÷ 8 active hours.

Before fees, expenses and taxes. Keep calendar time waiting separate from active hours. This is not a forecast, an average worker's earnings or a change to your contract rate.
