CrowdGen by Appen: why we stopped listing it

We stopped listing CrowdGen by Appen after our August 2026 review found missing pay information in the public project feed we checked and concerns in payment reports. CrowdGen says qualification time is unpaid and most projects pay for accepted submissions. It also says project rates can be viewed before applying. Check the current project terms directly. For work whose advertised rates we can currently verify, check the live listings and the other platforms still on AIPayList.

Why CrowdGen by Appen is not listed here

  • ▲ Our August 2026 review found missing pay information in the public featured-project feed we checked. That endpoint covers featured projects, so it does not establish what every project pays or what a signed-in contributor can see. CrowdGen says project rates can be viewed before applying.
  • ▲ CrowdGen says time spent preparing for or completing qualification tasks is unpaid, and most projects pay based on accepted submissions unless otherwise stated. Check the project's acceptance and payment terms before starting.
  • ▲ The figures that do surface are low and shrinking. A live listing advertised $2.40 an hour, contributors are commonly described as earning $200 to $600 a month, and reviewers report rates falling after the migration from Appen Connect.
  • ▲ Trust in payment itself is the problem, not just the rate. Its public review score sits near the bottom across more than a hundred reviews, with repeated first-hand accounts of earnings disappearing and accounts being deactivated without explanation. Work is also reconciled after month end and paid weeks later.

In fairness: Appen is a long-established data company and CrowdGen is a real platform with real projects, not a front. Plenty of people have been paid by it over the years, and in higher-cost countries the rates people report are ordinary rather than exploitative. If you already have an account and a project that works for you, nothing here says to abandon it.

$2 to $15/hr effective, once unpaid onboarding and waiting for tasks are counted. CrowdGen sets rates per country and project. Its public featured-project feed had no pay-range values when checked. That does not establish what other projects pay or what a signed-in contributor can see.

Where the reported figure comes from

Public worker reports, the platform's own published rates and help pages, and reporting, gathered by hand on 2026-08-26. Evidence rated medium. It is not measured from our job feed, and it never enters our medians, percentiles, sorting or alerts, which read published rates only.

Country: Country matters more than skill here. A live CrowdGen posting listed Social Media Evaluator for Myanmar at $2.40/hr, while Indeed shows about $10/hr for US search-engine evaluation and a Finnish reviewer calls a little over $20/hr realistic.

That sentence opens the CrowdGen Contributor Standards, which is the page governing who may work on the platform, and the line after it says these are minimum expectations to be eligible for and continue working on CrowdGen projects. So the worldwide claim is the platform's own general position rather than marketing on an unrelated page. source
