To participate in the Handshake AI Fellowship, you must be based in the U.S. and have a valid work authorization that can be supported by Handshake. F-1 students who are eligible for CPT or OPT may be eligible. STEM OPT is not supported.

  • Outside the US, you need an invitation. At this time, non-US persons are eligible to join Handshake AI on an invitation-only basis. If you've received an invitation, follow the onboarding steps in your invitation email to sign up and get started. If you have not received an invitation, you are not currently eligible to participate. source
  • A US tax number to onboard and to be paid. (US applicants, per the article it comes from) A SSN or ITIN is required to complete onboarding and receive payment. If you do not yet have an SSN or ITIN, you must wait until you've received one to complete your application and onboarding steps. source
  • Work authorisation wherever you are. To participate in the Program, you must: (a) be at least 18 years of age; (b) possess and continuously maintain valid work authorization in the country where you are located. source

Handshake does not publish a list of countries. Its main AI page says you must be based in the US, its own referral article says the programme is open to US-based and Canada-based students, and its live board carries roles requiring Indian work authorization and roles based in Canada. Those are three different answers from three Handshake pages. source

Its own opportunities board is the widest of the three. Around two hundred roles are open and roughly a dozen and a half name a country, most of them India and Canada, with single postings for the EU and UK and for Latin America. We do not treat a job posting as a platform policy, so those are not recorded as a country list either. source

For Nigeria and Kenya specifically, no Handshake page names either country and no published route exists. The only stated option is the invitation-only channel, and Handshake says you are welcome to keep a profile while you wait for one. source
