The role, as Handshake AI describes it
Opportunity Overview
Handshake is looking for experienced Civil and Structural Engineers to support AI research through flexible, part-time contract work. This is not a traditional engineering role—you’ll draw on your hands-on industry experience in civil or structural engineering to evaluate AI-generated content and provide feedback that helps AI reason like a practicing engineer.
This is an ongoing, project-based opportunity that you can take on alongside your current role.
What You’ll Do
• Create expert-level civil and structural engineering problems and scenarios grounded in real design, modeling, estimating, construction, and project workflows

• Review AI-generated responses for technical accuracy, practical feasibility, and alignment with industry standards and engineering practice
• Evaluate calculations, assumptions, models, quantities, estimates, and design recommendations for technical soundness and real-world applicability
• Assess AI-generated technical work involving structural design, code compliance, fabrication-accurate modeling, quantity takeoffs, estimating, and applied engineering analysis
• Provide clear, structured written feedback to help improve AI model performance
• Complete tasks at your own pace, with no set schedule or minimum-hour requirement
Project Details
• Work remotely and asynchronously from wherever you are.
• Set your own schedule with no minimum time requirement.
• Project placement depends on current availability. If this opportunity is full, additional projects will become available soon.
Qualifications
Ideal candidates meet all four of the following:
• Recent experience — Currently working as a civil or structural engineer, or have worked in the field within the past three years
• Degree — BS, MS, or PhD in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related field
• Hands-on ownership — Experience personally producing models, calculations, quantities, estimates, or other technical deliverables that others rely on to build, price, review, or approve work
• Technical depth — Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas:
• Code-based structural design and analysis
• Fabrication-accurate modeling and detailing
• Quantity takeoff and estimating
• Applied simulation
• Construction documentation and technical deliverables
• Building, infrastructure, or structural project design
Additional Qualifications
These are not required but will strengthen your application:
• Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification
• Experience applying relevant building codes, structural standards, and engineering specifications
• Proficiency with engineering and modeling tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, Civil 3D, Tekla Structures, SAP2000, ETABS, STAAD.Pro , RAM Structural System, RISA, or comparable software
• Experience with structural materials and systems including steel, reinforced concrete, timber, masonry, foundations, or specialty structures
• Experience with construction estimating, quantity surveying, cost modeling, or takeoff software
• Experience with BIM workflows, construction documentation, detailing, or multidisciplinary coordination
• Experience at an engineering consultancy, architecture/engineering firm, contractor, EPC firm, construction company, infrastructure organization, or other employer where engineers directly own technical project deliverables
Required for All Applicants
• Based in the United States
• Strong written communication and attention to detail
• Ability to explain complex civil and structural engineering concepts clearly
• Ability to work independently in a remote, asynchronous environment
